Traffic signs and traffic facilities are used to regulate traffic. They require an official order.

Traffic signs and traffic facilities are used to regulate traffic. They are ordered by the authorities and must be observed by road users. Temporary orders for traffic signs and traffic facilities are also possible.

However, traffic signs and devices may only be ordered if absolutely necessary.

Traffic signs include

• Traffic light displays (e.g. variable message signs).

Traffic facilities are

• Barriers,
• barrier posts,
• parking meters,
• parking ticket machines,
• railings, barriers,
• guidance systems,
• flashing light and traffic light systems ("traffic lights").

All traffic signs are listed in the traffic sign catalog (VZKat).

The costs for traffic signs and facilities are generally borne by the road authorities. Deviating from this, there are other regulations, in particular from § 5 b Para. 2 - 6 StVG and § 51 StVO (e.g. bearing of costs by the applicant for tourist signs).

Depending on the type of road (e.g. municipal, state or federal road), the road traffic authorities are

• Landesbetrieb Straßenbau und Verkehr Schleswig-Holstein, headquarters in Kiel,
• districts and independent cities,
• Towns and municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants,
• Independent towns and municipalities with up to 20,000 inhabitants as well as the authorities for orders
  • on stopping and parking,
  • to prevent extraordinary damage to municipal roads,
  • in connection with local events in accordance with Section 29 (2) of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO),
  • in connection with localized work in the road area.

Road construction authorities are those authorities that perform the tasks of the road construction authorities involved in accordance with the statutory regulations.
