If you extract water from groundwater or surface waters, you must report the quantities extracted to the responsible water authorities every year.

If you withdraw water from groundwater or surface waters, you must notify the competent authorities of the quantities withdrawn each year.

Withdrawal purposes are, for example

• Dewatering
• Service water and drinking water
• Fire extinguishing wells, watering livestock, cleaning equipment, supplying a farm household
• Irrigation (for example field irrigation)
• Gravel washing
• Fish farming
• Use of hydropower in surface waters
• Withdrawal from surface waters (springs, lakes, watercourses)

Places of use or facilities are for example

In groundwater:

• Drawdown wells
• Artesian wells
• Industrial wells (industry and commerce)
• Irrigation wells
• Wells
• Drainage
• Discharge wells
• Fire extinguishing wells
• Garden fountains
• Domestic wells
• Waterworks wells

In surface waters:

• Running waters
• canals
• Coastal waters
• Surface waters
• lakes
• Transitional waters

Evidence (e.g. measurement results, operating logs and impact files)

If you want to submit the notification online:

• You call up the online service.
• Select the district or independent city in which you draw water.
• If you withdraw water in different districts, you must submit one notification per district.
• You enter the quantities of water withdrawn and their use (withdrawal purposes) as well as the withdrawal locations.
• If any information is missing, you will be asked to provide further information.

If you wish to submit the notification in writing:

• Complete the appropriate form, if offered by your competent authority.
• If you withdraw water in different districts, you must submit one form per district.
• Send the form to your local water authority.

Before you can start tapping water, you need approval (permit, authorization) from the lower water authority.
