The certificate of marriageability is issued if it is required for marriage abroad.
It is issued for German citizens with residence or habitual abode abroad, by the Registry Office 1 in Berlin.
If you wish to marry abroad, it may be that there is a legal standard in the intended country of marriage which requires the presentation of such a certificate.
The responsibility for issuing a certificate of marriageability for this group of persons (German citizens with residence or habitual abode abroad) is located at Standesamt 1 in Berlin.
- The requirements, type and format of the evidence to be provided and the examination of the prerequisites for marriage are governed by German law, as is the case for a German citizen.
- Evidence must be provided by means of public documents:
- The civil status
- The place of residence, habitual abode
- The nationality
- As well as, if applicable, the last marriages and/or civil partnerships and their dissolutions
- The person must have German citizenship.
- You must have your domicile and habitual residence abroad
- The intended marriage is to take place abroad
- The intended marriage must not be prevented by any reason according to German law.
Costs may be incurred for the issuance of a certificate of marriageability. Please contact your registry office.
The issuance of a certificate of marriageability is applied for at the competent registry office 1 in Berlin. If the examination shows that there is no impediment to the intended marriage under German law, and if the required information on the person of both spouses has been provided, the registry office will issue the requested certificate of marriageability.
After issuance, the certificate of marriageability has a validity for the period of six months.
