The statutory health insurance funds are subject to state legal supervision.

The Federal Social Security Office supervises the statutory health insurance funds that are federally independent. Health insurance funds whose area of activity extends over more than three federal states are federally independent. Health insurance funds whose area of activity is limited to up to three federal states are subject to the respective state supervision.
