A person entitled to vote who is entered in a voters' register may exercise their right to vote by postal vote. This requires a prior application.
A corresponding application for a polling card must be submitted for postal voting. This application can be found on the back of the election notification (as a card or letter)
The application must be submitted to the municipal electoral officer of the (main) municipality of residence.
- Provide personal data (name, date of birth, registration address/main address, different mailing address if applicable)
- Written authorization if another person is to submit the application for you or receive your documents. You will find a template for completing the power of attorney on the back of your election notification.
Eligibility to vote in the respective election in accordance with the relevant electoral law.
- Applying for a polling card electronically (online application),
- In person at the polling station in your municipality,
- You submit an (informal) written application by post, fax or e-mail - you can use the form on the back of the election notification,
It is not possible to apply by telephone.
You will usually receive your polling card 3 weeks before election day.
If you do not receive it in time, please contact the relevant electoral office in your (main) municipality of residence.
As a rule, you must have applied for a polling card no later than two days before election day, 6.00 pm.
The postal voting documents must be received by the (main) municipality of residence by 6 p.m. on election day at the latest.
If you have applied for a polling card but never received it, you can obtain a new one up to 12:00 noon on the day before election day. To do so, please contact the relevant electoral office in your (main) municipality of residence.
If you are unable to cast your postal vote on your own due to a physical disability or problems with writing or reading, you may be assisted by another person. Your assistant must be at least 16 years old and confirm in lieu of an oath that the ballot paper has been marked in accordance with your declared wishes. The assistant is also obliged to maintain secrecy.
