Are you registered in the Register of Craftsmen with a craft requiring a license and would like to practice another craft requiring a license? Then you can apply for a license to practice another trade under certain conditions.
You must be entered in the Register of Craftsmen if you want to operate a craft requiring a license on your own or if you want to work as a company manager.
This also applies if
- you want to carry out a significant part of a craft requiring a license independently
- you want to carry out several trades requiring a license independently. In this case, you need to be entered in the register of craftsmen for each craft requiring a license
As a rule, you must provide proof of a master craftsman's examination or equivalent relevant qualification for entry in the register of craftsmen. Persons who already practise a craft requiring a license and wish to expand their commercial activity to another craft requiring a license can apply for a license to practise. In this respect, proof of the necessary knowledge and skills is required.
It is irrelevant on what basis the existing entry in the register of craftsmen was made. The respective owner/manager who meets the registration requirements for the previously registered craft requiring a license is entitled to apply. The authorization to practice may be granted subject to conditions and ancillary provisions.
- Application for a license to practice
- Proof of the required knowledge in the craft requiring a license for which you also wish to be entered in the craft register
The following requirements must be met:
- A craft requiring a license is already being practiced on the basis of an existing entry in the register of craftsmen.
- Proof of the required knowledge and skills
The specific fee can be found in the Chamber of Crafts' schedule of fees, which is available on the Chamber's website.
You must submit your application for a license to practice electronically via the online procedure or in writing to your local Chamber of Skilled Crafts. Online applications are also available via administrative portals. The following procedural steps are involved:
- Application
- Go to the website of your local Chamber of Skilled Crafts and download the application forms for a license to practice. You are also welcome to contact your Chamber of Skilled Crafts directly and have the required documents sent to you
- Complete the forms in full and send them to your local Chamber of Skilled Crafts together with the required documents
- Alternatively, you can apply online via administrative portals
- Carrying out the administrative procedure for issuing a license to practice
The procedure for issuing a license to practice is used to check whether the following criteria are met:
- Entry in the Register of Craftsmen as business owner or business manager
- Registration requirements are fulfilled in person
- Proof of the required knowledge and skills (the scope of the proof depends on the previous qualification and on whether the authorization to practice is applied for the entire craft or only for a sub-area).
- Decision on application
If the legal requirements are met, you will be granted a license to practice. The license can be granted for an unlimited or limited period of time and can also be restricted.
- Trade register entry
You can be entered in the register of craftsmen on the basis of the authorization to practice. Together with the notification of registration, the company receives the so-called craftsman's card (§ 10 Para. 2 HwO).
- Entry in the register of craftsmen with authorization to practice another craft requiring a license
- Without a corresponding qualification (e.g. master craftsman examination, etc.) in another craft requiring a license, an additional entry in the register of craftsmen can be made on the basis of an authorization to practice if proof of the required knowledge and skills ("similar to a master craftsman") is provided
- The license can be issued with conditions and ancillary provisions, e.g. with a time limit or restriction
- The application for a license to practice and further information can be obtained from the local Chamber of Skilled Crafts in whose district the commercial establishment is located
