If you were prevented from practicing your profession or a socially equivalent profession in the GDR due to political persecution, you can be professionally rehabilitated and receive compensation payments. The same applies if you were unable to complete your vocational training for the same reasons.
Mothers who were prevented from bringing up their children due to unjust imprisonment are entitled to compensation under pension law. Under special circumstances, fathers can also claim this. The child-raising periods are taken into account in the pension history on application.
Certificate
If you meet the requirements for rehabilitation, you will receive a certificate in accordance with the Occupational Rehabilitation Act (BerRehaG) or for the recognition of child-raising periods.
The certificates are used to apply for certain benefits:
- compensation for disadvantages under pension law from the respective pension insurance provider
- social compensation benefits in the event of particular impairment of the economic situation and a period of persecution up to 02.10.1990 or at least three years at the local social welfare office
in the case of interventions in job-related training, also
- preferential vocational training and retraining under the Employment Promotion Act (AFG) at the local employment agency,
- preferential support under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) from the Federal Office of Administration or the German Equalization Bank
- Criminal rehabilitation order or certificate in accordance with the Prisoner Assistance Act
- School and skilled labor certificates
- Identity card for work and social insurance of the GDR
If prevented from raising children:
- Proof of unlawful imprisonment or detention
- Birth certificate of the child
In the former GDR you have been:
- unlawfully imprisoned,
- taken into political custody,
- subjected to an official or other measure that served the purpose of political persecution.
Additionally in the case of interference with your profession:
- You were prevented from practicing your profession or a socially equivalent profession or
- You were unable to complete your vocational training.
In addition, in the case of interventions in vocational training:
- you were refused admission to an educational institution leading to a higher education entrance qualification,
- you were unable to continue your education at an educational institution leading to a higher education entrance qualification,
- you were refused admission to a final examination leading to a higher education entrance qualification,
- you were refused admission to training at a technical college or university or
- it was made impossible for you to continue your education at an educational institution other than one leading to a higher education entrance qualification.
If you were prevented from raising children
You were unlawfully imprisoned or in political custody, which prevented you from bringing up your child.
