If you have completed training in the European Economic Area that allows you to work as a lawyer, you can have this qualification recognised by the Landesjustizprüfungsamt Baden-Württemberg. With this recognition, you may work as a lawyer in Germany.

If your education differs significantly from the requirements, you must first take an aptitude test.

Once you have been admitted as a European lawyer in Germany for three years, you can immediately apply for admission as a lawyer at the Bar Association.

For this procedure you can use the services of the Single Point of Contact. He or she will accompany you through the procedure, take care of the correspondence with all the offices responsible for your matter and will be at your side as a competent advisor.

• Curriculum vitae in tabular form in German
• Proof in the original or as a copy certifying the entitlement to direct access to the profession of a European lawyer
• Proof that more than half of the minimum period of training was carried out in one of the states mentioned in § 16 Absatz 2 Nummer 1 des Gesetzes über die Tätigkeit europäischer Rechtsanwälte in Deutschland (EuRAG) or, in the cases of § 2 EuRAG, a certificate of at least 3 years of professional practice
• A declaration in German stating whether and, if so, at which examination offices an application pursuant to § 16 Absatz 1 EuRAG has already been made or an aptitude test taken
• if applicable: proof that differences pursuant to § 16a Absatz 3 Satz 1 Nummer 1 und 2 EuRAG have been fully compensated for

If you apply to the Landesjustizprüfungsamt Baden-Württemberg (State Judicial Examination Office) to have an equivalent professional qualification determined, use the form provided (-> Forms and further offers).

• The Judicial Examination Office will check whether you have acquired all the knowledge and skills required to work as a lawyer in Germany during your training. In this case, your degree will be recognised.
• If there are differences, you will have to take an aptitude test.

Aptitude test

The aptitude test consists of a written and an oral part. The written part of the examination consists of two written examinations. The oral examination consists of a short lecture and a discussion.

The Examinations Office shall issue a confirmation of successful completion of the aptitude test.

A failed aptitude test may be repeated twice.
