Do you want to study medicine? Are you also interested in working as a general practitioner, especially in rural areas in the Free State of Saxony? Then you have the opportunity to apply online via Amt24 for a place to study medicine in the Free State of Saxony
In the winter semester 2022/23, 6.5 per cent of the study places in human medicine and the model study programme in human medicine in Chemnitz in the Free State of Saxony were allocated for the first time to prospective GPs who want to work in underserved areas or areas at risk of undersupply in the Free State of Saxony after completing their studies. The so-called Landarztquote (rural doctors quota) was decided by the state government in the Sächsisches Landarztgesetz (Saxon Rural Doctors Act).
You can apply for one of these places via Amt24. Different criteria apply for admission than for the centralised admission procedure via the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (Foundation for University Admissions). A separate selection procedure is carried out. This consists of two stages.
2-Stage Selection Procedure
In the first stage, a total of five criteria defined in the Sächsisches Landarztgesetz are assessed. Aspects that are important for working as a GP in rural or underserved areas and that indicate your motivation to work as a GP in the countryside are already taken into account.
In addition to the average grade of your university entrance qualification and the result of a study ability and aptitude test, vocational training you have already completed or a profession you have already practised can also be taken into account when allocating places. Certain voluntary or honorary activities are also taken into account. Selection interviews take place in the second stage of the selection process.
As a General Practitioner for 10 Years
In return, you will be expected to complete further training after your studies that will authorise you to become a GP. You will complete this training in the Free State of Saxony. You must then work for at least 10 years as a contract doctor in an area for which a special need has been identified.
To ensure this, the Free State of Saxony will conclude a public law contract with you. Among other things, this will also include the regulation of a contractual penalty. The amount of the contractual penalty is already stipulated in the Sächsisches Landarztgesetz. It amounts to EUR 250,000 and is due if you do not fulfil your contractual obligations. You should take this into account when deciding on an application and planning your future life.
Studying Medicine in Chemnitz, Dresden or Leipzig
Chemnitz, Dresden or Leipzig are possible study locations. You can specify one or more preferred locations. However, there is no guarantee that you will choose your preferred location. However, the better your overall result in the selection process, the higher the chance that your first choice will be considered.
