Persons must have the necessary specialist knowledge in radiation protection in order to take up activities during operation or for other activities in connection with X-ray equipment and interfering radiators.
The specialist knowledge depends on the activity in an area of application and is categorised according to specialist knowledge groups.

This also includes the employment of persons who carry out activities for third parties in the operation of X-ray equipment and interfering radiators.

The required radiological protection expertise is generally acquired through

  • suitable training for the respective field of application,
  • practical experience (expertise) and
  • successful participation in courses recognised by the competent body.

The acquisition of the necessary expertise in radiation protection is tested and certified by the competent body.

Proof of specialised knowledge must be provided for

  • Radiation protection officers who operate X-ray equipment or interference sources themselves or who manage or supervise their operation,
  • Radiation protection officers,
  • Persons who inspect, test, maintain or repair X-ray equipment or sources of interference on a professional basis,
  • Persons who carry out quality assurance in accordance with § 115 and § 116 StrlSchV on a professional basis or who manage or supervise these activities,
  • Persons who perform tasks themselves or employ persons in the operation of third-party X-ray equipment or sources of interference,
  • Persons who use X-rays in cases other than for medical purposes or who carry out the application technically without being under the supervision and responsibility of a person with the necessary expertise in radiation protection.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

  • completed application form (see -> Forms and other offers)
  • Proof of training suitable for the respective field of application

  • Personal details,
  • a list of the activities with details of the periods of employment in the respective field of application and
  • the name of the organisation in which the activities were carried out.

The duration, type and scope of the practical experience to be acquired depend on the training and the respective field of application. The practical experience may only be acquired at an institution that is able to impart the required practical skills due to its technical and personnel resources.
