If you would like to continue to have the right to stay in Germany after your residence permit expires, you can apply for an extension of your residence permit.

Extension for humanitarian reasons or in cases of hardship

A residence permit for urgent humanitarian reasons or in cases of exceptional hardship is granted for a period of six months. It can only be extended if you have already been legally resident in Germany for at least 18 months when it was first issued.

Continued residence permitted if application is submitted in good time

If you apply for an extension in good time before the expiry of the period of validity, your continued residence is considered permitted until the decision of the immigration department. A late application may result in legal disadvantages.

Depending on the individual case, the immigration office may require further documents from you.

• The same requirements apply as when your residence title was first issued.
• The reasons for the residence title must continue to exist
  • Recognition as a refugee
  • Recognition as a person entitled to asylum
  • Recognition as a person entitled to subsidiary protection
  • Determination of a ban on deportation
  • urgent humanitarian or personal reasons
  • exceptional case of hardship
  • Victim of a criminal offence
• Existence of an application for extension
• no grounds for refusal

Note: The requirements depend in detail on the facts of the case and the reason for your stay. Find out in detail from your foreigners authority which requirements you have to fulfil.

Attention! You are not entitled to an extension of your residence permit if there is an interest in deportation.

Fee framework (depending on procedure)

• Adults EUR 93.00 to 96.00
• Minors: EUR 46.50 to 48.00
• for refugees and persons receiving social benefits: none

Your immigration office will inform you about the respective fee amount.

• The application must be made in person at the competent immigration office.

Issue

• If your application is granted, the immigration department will commission the Bundesdruckerei to produce the electronic residence title (card in cheque card format) with a new validity date. The authority will inform you when your residence permit is ready for collection.
