If you have lost your passport abroad or it has been stolen, you must have replacement travel documents issued for your journey home.
Depending on whether you want to return directly to Germany or travel to other countries, either a travel document that is only valid for entry into Germany or a new passport must be issued.
Note: Some countries require the entry stamp in the passport as proof of legal entry when leaving the country. In these cases, you may have to apply for an exit visa.

If there is no German diplomatic mission abroad, please contact the representative authority of another member state of the European Union (EU) in the country you are travelling to.

- Proof of identity and nationality (e.g. identity card, copy of lost or stolen passport)
Tip: To ensure that new travel documents can be issued to you more quickly, you should carry copies of all your identity documents with you when travelling.
- for a travel document as a passport replacement for direct return to Germany: EUR 8.00
- for a passport with 32 / 48 pages:
- Persons who have reached the age of 24: EUR 72.00 / 94.00
- Persons who have not yet reached the age of 24: EUR 50.50 / 72.50
- for a passport using the express procedure: an additional EUR 45.00 each
- for a temporary passport: EUR 39.00
- for a child's passport: EUR 26.00
Different fees apply for travel documents issued by the representative authorities of other EU countries.
Please note! The fees are collected by foreign representations exclusively in the respective national currency.
Replacement travel documents can be issued on request by the German diplomatic mission in the country you are travelling to. Go to the German embassy, consulate general or consulate with the required documents (honorary consuls are not authorised to issue documents).
Issue

Notes: In order to be able to issue you with a temporary passport, the passport authority of your place of residence must issue the authorisation. This can take different lengths of time depending on the individual case and the availability of the authority. If you also require an exit visa, your onward journey may also be delayed.

- temporary passport: up to one year
