Do you believe that a federal public body is not managing your data carefully or is forwarding your data without your knowledge? This could be customs, the federal police, the German Federal Pension Insurance, the miners' insurance fund or a federal health insurance fund such as Barmer, DAK, TK), a tax authority (e.g. your local tax office), a job centre operated jointly by the federal and local authorities or a company that provides postal or telecommunications services.
Or you cannot obtain information about the data stored about you from these organisations? In such cases, you have the right to complain to the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
The Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information is the point of contact for complaints about
- all public bodies of the federal government ,
- Telecommunications and postal service companies
- Federal courts, insofar as they are involved in administrative matters.

You feel that your fundamental right to informational self-determination has been violated.
- Submit your complaint in writing, verbally, by telephone or electronically (see -> Online application) to the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI).
- Describe the facts of the case in your complaint.
- Name the allegedly responsible body.
- The BfDI will investigate your complaint, clarify the facts and, if necessary, remedy any breaches of data protection law.
- You will be informed of the result of the investigation.
Note: Violations of data protection regulations can lead to the initiation of criminal or fine proceedings.
