Krankentransport abrechnen

If you or a relative need to be transported in connection with the treatment of an illness because this journey cannot be carried out privately, you will require patient transport or an ambulance (e.g. if ordered by the doctor treating you).

Note: Do not confuse patient transport with "call an ambulance", which you order in an acute emergency. Patient transport is intended for people who need medical care and cannot use a taxi due to their condition - for example, because they can only be transported lying down.

Point of contact

Contact your health insurance company to have the patient transport costs settled in accordance with § 60 SGB V.

The driver of the ambulance transport needs the following information to settle accounts with your health insurance company

• Your name, address and date of birth,
• address of the health insurance company,
• number of the exemption card, if applicable,
• Your signature on a billing document and
• the doctor's prescription.

• Travel costs for both outpatient and inpatient treatment can be covered by statutory health insurance.
• The journeys must be necessary in connection with a service provided by the health insurance fund for compelling medical reasons. These can only arise from the nature of the illness.
• Full or partial coverage of the costs incurred depends on the conditions of the individual case and how you are insured.
• In case of doubt, you will have to pay for any transport services that you arrange without consulting your health insurance provider. If a third party arranges transport, make sure that the costs are covered.

"Verordnung zur Krankenbeförderung": the costs are usually covered by the health insurance companies except for a small contribution of at least 5.00 euros and a maximum of 10.00 euros (in principle, 10 per cent of the fare).

• Obtain a "Verordnung zur Krankenbeförderung" from your doctor, which you should carry with you on every journey and show to the driver.
• After the journey, submit the medical prescription to your health insurance company for settlement.
