As a rule, lost property must be collected in person from the lost property office. However, you can also be represented by a person with a power of attorney.
The lost property will be handed over to you against payment of an administrative fee. If the finder claims it and has instructed the lost property office to collect it, you must also pay the finder's fee and/or reimbursement of expenses before receiving it.
- Identity card
- iroof of ownership, e.g. purchase contract
- if a mobile phone is lost: the IMEI or SIM card number (can be found in the purchase documents)
- in the case of collection by a third party: a power of attorney
- if applicable, the notification letter from the lost property authorities
- Through enquiry or written notification from the lost property office, you have learned that the item you have missed has been handed in to the lost property office.
- When you go to the lost property office, you will be asked to describe the missing object and, if necessary, to present proof of ownership (purchase contract, registration numbers, etc.).
- After presenting the proof and paying the applicable fees, you will receive your valuable object back.
Note: If the lost property is located in another lost property office, the lost property will be forwarded to the lost property office responsible for your city or district within the Federal Republic of Germany.
Retention period for lost property: six months from the day the lost property is reported; food, drink, medicines and chemicals are disposed of immediately.
