Every truck driver who drives a vehicle for the commercial transport of passengers or goods with a digital tachograph must be in possession of a driver card. The driver card is issued on application by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).
The driver card stores the driving and rest periods for 28 days as well as the data on the identity of the driver. The driver card is therefore a personal document and cannot be transferred to third parties.
In principle, the following must be equipped with a driver card
- all vehicles and vehicle units used for the carriage of goods and whose maximum permissible mass, including trailers or semi-trailers, exceeds three and a half tonnes
- Vehicles for passenger transport with more than eight passenger seats from the date of first registration 01.05.2006

- in case of non-German citizenship: certificate of registration required
- You are resident in Germany (Saxony).
- You are entitled to drive a vehicle covered by Regulation (EC) 561/2006.
Framework fee EUR 35.50, of which:
- administrative share (according to Landesgebührenordnung)
- costs for production / personalisation EUR 12.00 per card
Expenses for dispatch or issue (direct dispatch by the KBA: EUR 3.00.)
Information
- the total amount is due upon submission of the application.
- if the application is refused or rejected due to lack of requirements, a fee will be charged in accordance with the Landesgebührenordnung (schedule of fees).
For identification - also for a subsequent card - you must appear in person at the issuing office. This can be when handing in the application documents or when collecting the driver card.
- Apply for the driver card using the application form of the respective testing company.
- Forms and leaflets can be obtained here via Amt24 or directly from the testing companies ("point of contact").
- Complete the application form and compile the required documents.
- As the evidence must be in the original, it is advisable to hand in the application documents in person.
The issuing office will inform you when the driver card is ready for collection, or the Federal Motor Transport Authority will send it to you.
Follow-up application
The issuing offices recommend ordering a follow-up card about four to six weeks before the expiry date.
Notes:
- If the old card becomes defective, stolen or lost before its validity expires, the follow-up card that has already been produced but is not yet valid must be confiscated.
- The driver card becomes unusable after expiry and does not have to be returned. After the expiry of the validity period, the driver card remains with the holder (proof of the last 28 days).
- Initial application: 20 working days
- replacement or renewal card: five working days
Start of deadline: complete submission of the documents or confirmation of the correctness of the information (e.g. positive query at the Central Tachograph Card Register or Driving Licence Register).
Validity:
- five years
- Replacement card: validity of the replaced card
- Replacement issue if remaining validity is less than 185 days: full validity (five years from date of order)
Subsequent application: in good time before expiry of validity, six months before at the earliest
Tip: If your personal data change (driving licence number, address, etc.), you may still continue to use the driver card until the end of its validity.
Protect the driver card from misuse. In case of loss, inform the issuing office immediately in writing. If a driver card is stolen, report it to the police; you will need the written report to order a replacement.
- If a driver card is found after being reported lost, it may no longer be used; return it to the issuing office immediately.
- In the event of malfunction or damage, return the card to the issuing office for inspection by the Federal Motor Transport Authority.
- The return of a driver card is also required if the conditions for issuing it subsequently cease to apply.
