Special licence under species protection law for the removal of nests of hornets, wasps, bumblebees and wild bees
Hornets, wasps, bumblebees and wild bees are protected species. If, in exceptional cases, they pose a direct danger to humans, you can only relocate a nest of these insects with a special licence, which you can apply for from the lower nature protection authority.
Before you think about relocating or removing the nest, the following measures could help:
- separating a nest in the loft from the rest of the living space with a thin-meshed net
- cordon off the nest area with a fence at a distance of around five metres
- attach a screen
Tips for handling hornets, wasps, bumblebees and wild bees
The species-protected hornets, wasps, bumblebees and wild bees are colony-forming insects and do not survive longer than one summer. They fulfil important functions in the natural cycle. Hornets and wasps regulate the species structure of insects, bumblebees use their long proboscis to pollinate flowers that bees cannot reach, honeybees ensure a rich harvest in the orchard.
Most species are harmless and do not attack humans if they are undisturbed. Only two wasp species are interested in sweet drinks or food.
The nests are built in natural cavities (for example woodpecker holes) or in artificial cavities such as attics. Sometimes nest boxes or shutter boxes are also colonised. The nest area (approximately four metres around the nest) is defended by the insects, if necessary by stinging. The following disturbances should therefore be avoided
- violent, rapid movements
- prolonged movement of the flight path
- vibrations to the nest
- tampering with the nest or entrance hole
- direct breathing on the animals
A hornet sting is no more dangerous for normally sensitive people than a wasp sting. The animals are peaceful outside the nest area.
Tip: You can get advice locally from nature conservation organisations, beekeepers or the fire brigade.
- Procedural costs: Fee range, but at least EUR 55.00
- Costs for relocation or control if a company or expert is commissioned
Make an informal written application to the responsible authority for permission to remove the insect nest.
Your application should contain at least the following information:
- which insect species is to be removed (bumblebee, wasp, wild bee, hornet)?
- location of the nest on your property or on your house
- reason for relocation or control
- date for relocation or control
- if you are commissioning a company to do this: Name and address of the company
Tip: If you have difficulties in determining the exact species of insect, please contact the responsible authority.
