The handling of weapons or ammunition is regulated by the Federal Weapons Act and generally requires a licence. Unauthorised handling of weapons is a criminal offence or - in certain cases - at least an administrative offence.

You need a "small firearms licence" if you want to carry an alarm weapon, an irritant weapon or a signal weapon with PTB marking. According to the legal definition, the term "carrying" refers to the exercise of actual force outside your own home, business premises, your own pacified property or a shooting range.

In contrast to the "large" firearms licence, you do not have to prove your expertise or need for the small firearms licence and you do not have to take out special liability insurance.

If you move to another town or municipality, you do not need to have your firearms licence transferred. When you register at your new place of residence, the local registration office will automatically receive the relevant data.

Reliability

The main requirement for reliability is that you do not have a criminal record.

personal suitability

The required personal aptitude is not possessed, for example, by those persons for whom facts justify the assumption that they are legally incompetent, addicted to alcohol or mentally ill.

• Issue of a small firearms licence: EUR 100.00
• Holders of a firearms licence must have their reliability and personal suitability checked again by the competent authority at regular intervals, but at least every three years: EUR 50.00 per check

• Complete the relevant fields on the application and submit it to the regulatory authority together with the required documents.

Online application

Use the online application form provided here in Amt24. Set up a service account in Amt24 and use it to log in to the service portal. Have electronic copies of the required documents ready.

• Follow the link to the online application and complete the data fields according to the instructions. You can save the information at any time and complete it at a later date.
• Once all data fields have been completed, you can finalise the application and the data will be sent to the competent authority.

The authority will check whether the applicant has the necessary reliability. To do this, it obtains the following information:

• information from the Federal Central Criminal Register and from the central register of public prosecutors
• a statement from the State Criminal Police Office, the Federal Police, the Customs Criminal Police Office and, if required, the Federal Criminal Police Office and
• information from the constitution protection authority responsible for the applicant's place of residence.

Note: If there are concerns about personal suitability, the competent authority may request a certificate from a public health officer, specialist doctor or specialist psychologist regarding mental or physical suitability.

If all requirements are met, you will be issued a small firearms licence. You will receive a written notification.

Validity: unlimited

You must take the necessary precautions to ensure that these items are not lost or used by third parties, even if they are unlicensed weapons or ammunition.
