If you have two or more flats in Germany, you must declare to the registration office which of these flats is your main residence. The others are then automatically your secondary residences. A person can only ever have one main residence.
Determining your main residence has important consequences, for example, the jurisdiction of many authorities is based on your main residence and you exercise your right to vote there.
Your main residence is the home you use most often, i.e. the one where you spend most of your time. If you are married and do not live permanently separated from your family, this is the family's predominantly used home. The same applies to registered civil partnerships. Minors have their main residence in the home predominantly used by the person with custody. If the persons with custody live separately, the home predominantly used by one of the persons with custody is the minor's main home.
You must notify the relevant registration authority of any change of main residence - however, this does not necessarily have to involve a move. In the case of a move, this notification is made together with the re-registration.
- You rent another flat and make it your main residence. Your previous home becomes a secondary residence.
- You make a secondary residence your main residence.
- To change your main residence, you must fill in and sign a registration form.
- Hand this in personally at the registration office
- or authorise another suitable person to do so.
- A form is available at the registration office or your municipality may provide you with one electronically via the Internet.
- Depending on what the local authority offers, you may not have to fill in the form and the data can be collected directly when you visit the authority in person. You must then confirm the accuracy of the data by signing a printout.
Note: Please note that you must also change the address or place of residence in your documents when you change your main residence.
