Start-ups

You must register your future company with the statutory accident insurance institution responsible for your sector within one week of starting self-employment. In the case of companies, organisations and freelancers, the law stipulates that this is the commercial employers' liability insurance association, unless responsibility lies with the agricultural employers' liability insurance association or the public sector accident insurance institutions.

You need the membership number of your accident insurance institution and the associated categorisation into hazard classes in order to register employees for social insurance. As a member, you can also obtain advice on occupational health and safety issues when setting up your business premises.

Changes in the current company

You must notify your employer's liability insurance association within four weeks of any changes to your current business operations that could be relevant to accident insurance (e.g. a permanent change in the focus of your activities).

You take up a commercial or freelance activity.

First call up the registration form online and fill it out completely. Then submit the notification to the accident insurance institution responsible for your sector.

• Registration: within one week of the start of the business or freelance activity (this already includes preparatory work)
• Changes to ongoing business operations: within four weeks

As an entrepreneur or freelancer, you are generally not automatically insured, but you can voluntarily insure yourself against the consequences of work and commuting accidents with your employers' liability insurance association, please contact them directly.
