Application for a licence to practise in accordance with Section 7a of the Crafts Code (HWO)
If you are already registered in the Register of Qualified Craftsmen and would like to practise an additional craft, you can apply for a licence to practise an additional craft under certain conditions.
Please note: With a licence to practise, you are not allowed to hold the title of master craftsman or train apprentices in the relevant trade.
You can also obtain a licence to practise for an additional craft requiring a licence or for essential activities of this craft. To do so, you must provide evidence of the required knowledge and skills. The Chamber of Crafts will also take into account your previous professional experience and activities.
The trades requiring authorisation are listed in Annex A of the Crafts Code.
Single point of contact (EINHEITLICHER ANSPRECHPARTNER)
You can use the service of the Single Point of Contact for this procedure. They will guide you through the process, take care of correspondence with all the authorities responsible for your application and provide you with expert advice.

- You already practise a craft in accordance with § 1 HwO and are therefore entered in the register of qualified craftsmen
you can prove your knowledge and skills in another trade by means of
- certificates (journeyman's certificate, university or technical college certificate or other certificates from state-recognised technical colleges)
- your professional career to date (job references, references etc.)
- in case of doubt: proof of expertise
You can apply for exemption authorisation in person, in writing or online at your local Chamber of Crafts (HWK) or via the Single Point of Contact (EA); depending on the service, you can access the application form on the Internet or use the online service (see -> Online application).
You are well advised to contact the chamber before submitting your application.
- You can obtain the necessary forms and information sheets online here via Amt24 or directly via the portal of your Chamber of Crafts.
- Complete the application and submit it to the Chamber of Crafts together with the required documents and evidence.
- After the Chamber of Crafts has reviewed your application, you will receive written notification as to whether and to what extent the authorisation to practise will be granted.
- An entry will be made in the Register of Qualified Craftsmen.
The Chamber of Crafts can also grant the authorisation to practise subject to conditions, requirements or for a limited period of time or restrict it to a significant part of the activities that belong to a skilled trade listed in Appendix A.
"Old journeyman regulation"
Without a master craftsman's examination, you can also obtain a licence to practise some trades in accordance with Section 7b of the German Crafts Code (HwO) if you have completed relevant training as a journeyman or skilled worker and have worked in the trade for at least six years - at least four of which must have been in a managerial position.
