When you register your child at the primary school in your school district, the school entry phase begins. At the time of school enrolment, you will be given the opportunity to make an individual appointment for the school entrance examination.

The school entrance examination is the statutory compulsory examination for all children before they start school. A doctor from the paediatric and youth medical service of the responsible health authority will examine your child's level of development with a view to the imminent start of school. At least one parent must be present to provide the doctor with the necessary information.

Voraussetzungen

The following must take part in a school entrance examination

  • all children who have reached the age of 6 by 30 June of the beginning school year
  • children who have been deferred from school attendance
  • Children who are to start school early at the request of their parents

Note: Children who have reached the age of 6 by 30 September of the current year and are registered at school by their parents are also considered to be of school age.

Verfahrensablauf

The examination takes place on the school premises or at the public health department. A parent/legal guardian must be present during the examination. The findings will be communicated immediately.

The doctor will carry out an examination of your child's level of development. The main focus here is on the areas that are particularly important for successful school attendance. These include

  • Recording metric data (height, weight)
  • Carrying out vision and hearing tests
  • physical examination
  • Checking vaccination status and vaccination counselling

The following aspects are also examined:

  • playful assessment of school-relevant brain functions
  • General knowledge
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • motor-coordinative performance
  • Hearing and vision
  • logical thinking
  • age-appropriate language development
  • Laterality (handedness)
  • psychosocial behaviour

Findings that require further medical clarification are communicated to the legal guardian and an appropriate referral is recommended. The parents will be advised on any necessary support measures. If necessary, the paediatric and adolescent medical service will inform the head teacher about any necessary school measures and provide general advice.
