In addition to permanent stalls, weekly markets usually also have daily stalls. Find out about the local regulations for authorisation as a day trader for the local weekly market in good time from the relevant municipal or city administration.
A weekly market is a regularly recurring, time-limited event at which certain types of goods (primarily fruit, vegetables, bread and baked goods, cheese, eggs, meat and sausage products, flowers) are offered. In addition, legal regulations may stipulate that everyday goods (including pots, frying pans, broomsticks) may also be offered for sale.
All details of weekly markets - from the location and time to applying for a stand and market fees to setting up and dismantling the stalls - are laid down by the local authorities and towns in their bylaws. There is no entitlement to authorisation as a day trader or to the allocation or retention of a specific sales location.
Tip: If you are interested in selling goods at a weekly market, find out about the local regulations from the municipal or city administration in good time.

The following documents and information are often required:
- Identity document
- Tax number (copy of the official notification)
- for travelling trade:
- Travelling trade card
- VAT booklet or exemption from keeping the VAT booklet
- in the case of a standing business:
- Registration certificate of the trade (so-called trade licence)
- Proof of (business) liability insurance, if applicable
- for employees working at the market stall additionally:
- Identity document
- if applicable, a work permit under immigration law
- for trade in foodstuffs:
- Certificate and instruction according to § 43 Infektionsschutzgesetz
If you run a business, you generally need a travelling trade licence to operate at weekly markets.
You do not need a travelling trade licence if you:
- sell home-grown products from agriculture and forestry, vegetable growing, fruit growing and horticulture, poultry farming and beekeeping as well as hunting and fishing at a market
- come from another member state of the European Union or another state of the European Economic Area (EEA) and your place of business is not in Germany.
The authorisation and allocation of places by the authority or by the market management is based on various criteria. Among other things, the diversity and quality of the market offer must be ensured - the principle of "producers before traders" often applies. The order of applications is also taken into account.
Note: The competent authority can prohibit a trader from participating if facts justify the assumption that he or she does not have the necessary reliability.
as a rule: EUR 2.50 to EUR 15.00
The amount of the market fees is determined by the municipalities and towns in the local fee statutes and varies from municipality to municipality. Additional costs may be incurred, for example, for the electricity supply to your stall. For more information, please contact the responsible office.
Enquire about the application formalities directly at the responsible office.
- Ask whether a written application is required and whether a form is available. Depending on what the authority offers, you can also download the form from the Internet ("Forms & online services").
- It may also be the case that a verbal enquiry to the market management on the market day itself is sufficient for a day authorisation for a weekly market in a municipality.
- Depending on the time of application, you will find out in advance or only on site at the market whether you will receive a day licence or which sales area you will be allocated.
Even if you have already submitted the required documents to the authorities, you and, if applicable, your employees should have these documents with you on the market day so that you can identify yourself.
Day of the market
Note: The municipal bylaws generally stipulate that a day stall can also be applied for from the market management on the market day itself. For example, a stall can be allocated to a day trader at short notice if the holder of a permanent licence does not arrive by the start of the selling time.
