In the environmental zones of several cities in Germany, there are driving bans for vehicles with particularly high exhaust emissions. Only vehicles that are labelled with a corresponding fine dust sticker or that are exempt from the driving ban are allowed to drive in these zones.
Information on the responsible authority:
In addition to the vehicle registration authorities, you can also obtain the fine dust sticker from the testing organisations.
You will receive a fine particle sticker for your vehicle if it belongs to one of the pollutant groups two to four:
- Pollutant group two: red sticker
- Pollutant group three: yellow sticker
- Pollutant group four: green sticker
If your vehicle falls into pollutant group one (older petrol vehicles before Euro one and older diesel vehicles with emission standard Euro one or worse), no sticker can be issued.
The classification of your vehicle into one of the four pollutant groups is based on the emission code numbers that you can find in the vehicle documents:
- old vehicle registration certificate: digit one, the fifth and sixth digit
- new registration certificate part I: field 14.1, the right two digits
Tip: The above-mentioned testing organisations offer the possibility of determining the emission group online using the vehicle documents.
Contact one of the competent authorities. They will determine whether your vehicle can be issued with a fine dust sticker and if so, which one. It will then be issued to you.
Label your vehicle with the fine dust sticker. You must affix it to the windscreen so that it is clearly visible from the inside. In order to ensure smooth control of vehicles in the environmental zones, it is advisable to affix it to the right-hand edge of the windscreen.
