If a burial is not possible within provided deadlines for understandable reasons, the responsible relatives or the undertaker must apply for an extension of the waiting period

The public order office can also apply for an extension of the waiting period, for example if it takes a long time to identify the relatives of a deceased person.

Applicable deadlines for burials

• Regular minimum waiting period:
  whether burial or cremation, the burial may take place at the earliest 48 hours after the death has been ascertained
• Longest regular waiting period:
  a burial or cremation must be completed within 8 days after the death has been ascertained

Caution The waiting period for burial is calculated from the date of the post-mortem examination, not from the date of death!

Single point of contact (Einheitlicher Ansprechpartner)

For this procedure, you as a funeral director can make use of the service of the Single Point of Contact. This person accompanies you through the procedure, takes over the correspondence for you with all the offices responsible for your concern and is at your side as a competent advisor.

Your informal letter must contain the following information:

• Surname, first names, address, date of birth, date of death of the deceased
• Reasons for the extension of the waiting period
• Date of (planned) burial or cremation
• Name and address including fax number of the funeral director

• Waiting period extension costs: EUR 25.00 to EUR 35.00.

• you apply for an extension of the waiting period in writing to the public health department of the place of death
• the health authority will grant you a permit for burial outside the burial period (extension of the waiting period)
• You will receive a fee notice

• Extension of the waiting period: is usually granted on the day of application
