Implementation of the marketing standard for eggs, application for registration of a laying hen farm according to § 3 Laying Hen Farm Register Act.
All farms that keep at least 350 laying hens and farms that market eggs subject to mandatory marking must be registered and assigned an identification number.
Exempt from the registration obligation are farms that keep laying hens exclusively for the production of hatching eggs as well as farms with less than 350 laying hens, provided that they market the eggs exclusively ex-farm, at the door and thus directly to the end consumer. At weekly markets, direct marketers must also mark the eggs they sell with the producer code.
Farms that are not required to register can do so voluntarily upon request.
Marketing standards
The marketing standards for eggs Regulation (EC) No. 1308/2013 and Regulation (EC) No. 589/08 stipulate, among other things, that each egg must be marked with a producer code, with which the consumer must be provided with comprehensible information on the farming method and the place of production. Only direct marketers who sell eggs directly to the end consumer are exempt from this regulation.
The basis for this regulation is Directive 1999/74/EC (minimum standards for the protection of laying hens). It stipulates that all establishments covered by this directive must be registered with a number that enables the traceability of eggs placed on the market for human consumption.
This requirement is implemented by Directive 2002/4/EC on the registration of establishments keeping laying hens. It prescribes the data to be registered, the code for the farming method and the code for the individual member states throughout the EU.
Single Point of Contact
For this procedure, you can use the service of the Single Point of Contact (Einheitlicher Ansprechpartner). They will guide you through the administrative procedure, take care of correspondence with all the offices responsible for your request and will be available to you as a competent advisor.
Submit a written application for registration of your laying hen operation using the prescribed form.
- The competent body will examine your application and you will receive a written decision on the result.
- If the registration is successful, you will be assigned the producer code (egg stamp number) for each house, with which the eggs must be marked.
For the marketing of eggs sorted by weight classes beyond the door-to-door business to resellers or via the farm store, registration as a packing center is required in addition to your registration as a producer farm.
