Authorisation to use the professional title "Ingenieur / Ingenieurin" in accordance with section 1 of the Sächsisches Ingenieurgesetz (SächsIngG)

The professional title "Ingenieur / Ingenieurin" is protected in the Free State of Saxony. It may only be used by persons who fulfil the statutory requirements.

As a rule, only those who have completed a course of study with certain content requirements at a German university or vocational academy may call themselves an "engineer" without a separate licence. 

There are no professional obligations and there is no compulsory membership of a chamber.

Attention! If you use the professional title without authorisation, the Saxony Chamber of Engineers is authorised to prohibit you from doing so. Unauthorised use is an administrative offence that can be punished with a fine.

Notes:

• If you have an academic title (e.g. Dipl.-Ing., Bachelor, Master etc.), you are authorised to use this title regardless of the professional title mentioned above.
• In the case of an academic title based on a foreign educational qualification, you use the title in the language of the Member State of origin, adding the name and location of the educational institution or examination board that awarded the educational qualification.

Foreign Qualifications

If you have a suitable degree or professional qualification obtained outside the Federal Republic of Germany, you have the right to use the professional title "Ingenieur / Ingenieurin" in the Free State of Saxony. The prerequisite is that you are entered in a special register at the Saxony Chamber of Engineers.

You may also use the professional title if you are authorised to do so under the law of another federal state of the Federal Republic of Germany.

You are authorised to use the job title " Ingenieur / Ingenieurin" if, for example, you have

• Successful completion of at least 6 semesters of full-time study (undergraduate Bachelor's degree or Diplom degree) at a German university or university of cooperative education in a technical or scientific field that is predominantly characterised by mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology (STEM subjects)
• Master's degree in a technical or scientific subject, provided that the majority of the required STEM subjects were taught in the undergraduate degree programme
• Successful completion of an operations manager course at a German state-recognised mining school
• Authorisation to use this professional title under the law of another country of the Federal Republic of Germany

• Basic fee: EUR 40.00
• Recognition fee: EUR 320.00

If you have a corresponding domestic training certificate, you have the right to use the professional title ""Ingenieur / Ingenieurin" in Saxony. There is no procedure and no deadlines.

Note: The Chamber of Engineers of Saxony can issue a certificate for the use of the professional title upon request for training certificates from the Federal Republic of Germany.
