Application for a licence to practise in accordance with Section 7b of the Crafts Code (HWO)
If you would like to practise a specific craft requiring authorisation without a corresponding master craftsman's title, you can obtain an authorisation to practise under certain conditions. This means that you fulfil the registration requirements for a craft requiring authorisation in the register of craftsmen.
Please note: With a licence to practise, you may not hold a master craftsman's title and may not provide training in the relevant trade.
The following trades requiring authorisation are exempt from these regulations:
- chimney sweep trade
- opticians
- audiologist
- orthopaedic technicians
- orthopaedic shoemakers
- dental technicians
Single point of contact (Einheitlicher Ansprechpartner)
You can use the service of the Single Point of Contact for this procedure. They will guide you through the procedure, take care of correspondence with all the bodies responsible for your matter and provide you with expert advice.
A licence to practise a craft requiring a licence is granted to anyone who
- has passed a journeyman's examination either in the corresponding craft, in a related craft or a final examination in a recognised training occupation corresponding to the craft to be practised,
- has practised this profession for at least six years,
- of which a total of at least four years in a managerial position in the craft applied for and
- provides evidence of the necessary business, commercial and legal knowledge.
Evidence
Proof can be provided in the form of job references, job descriptions or in another way. The documents should provide evidence of both the journeyman's activity and managerial activity carried out as well as the prescribed duration of this activity of six or four years.
A managerial position can be assumed if, as a journeyman, you have been given independent decision-making powers in a company or in significant parts of a company.
The required knowledge of business management, commercial and legal matters can either be derived from your previous work experience or can be demonstrated by your participation in training courses.
Note: The trades requiring authorisation are listed in Annex A of the Crafts Code.
You can apply for authorisation to practise in person, in writing or online at your local Chamber of Crafts (HWK) or via the Single Point of Contact (SPC); depending on the service, you can access the application form on the Internet or use the online service (see -> Online application).
You are well advised to contact the chamber before submitting your application.
- You can obtain the necessary forms and information sheets online here via Amt24 or directly via the portal of your Chamber of Crafts.
- Complete the application and submit it to the Chamber of Crafts together with the required documents and evidence.
- After the Chamber of Crafts has reviewed your application, you will receive written notification as to whether and to what extent the authorisation to practise will be granted.
- An entry will be made in the Register of Qualified Craftsmen.
The Chamber of Crafts can also grant the authorisation to practise subject to conditions or for a limited period of time or restrict it to a significant part of the activities that belong to a skilled trade listed in Appendix A.
Tip: Contact your Chamber of Crafts in good time to find out about the procedure and the documents required in your specific case ("Required documents").
