Recognition of university diplomas from other EU or EEA states as state examinations for state-certified food chemists
Food chemists from other states of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland can apply for recognition of their diploma or university degree as a state examination for state-certified food chemists for the Free State of Saxony.
Training to become a state-certified food chemist in Saxony is divided into two parts:
- Study of food chemistry at a university (standard period of study including examinations: nine semesters)
- Training in official food and commodity monitoring (training period including examinations: twelve months)
The state examination for state-certified food chemists is divided into three examination sections.

You can use the services of the Single Point of Contact for this procedure. This person will guide you through the procedure, take care of the correspondence with all the offices responsible for your concerns and will be at your side as a competent advisor.
- Application (informal)
- Diploma / proof of university degree
- Proof of citizenship
- Proof of German language skills
- Evidence of the contents of studies and training in the form of a course book, study regulations, examination regulations or in any other suitable form showing the contents of studies and the duration of the training completed to obtain the evidence of formal qualifications
- Certificate on the duration and type of previous professional activity in a member state of the European Union or another state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or Switzerland
Note: Documents in foreign languages must also be enclosed in an officially certified translation. The translation must have been done by a translator who is publicly appointed and sworn in Germany.
- You are a national of an EU or EEA country or Switzerland.
- You have obtained your higher education degree
- in an EU or EEA state or in Switzerland and
- you have completed at least three years of university education
- You have the German language skills required to exercise the profession.
- You take an aptitude test in which you demonstrate the scientific, food law and administrative knowledge and skills required to exercise the profession of a state-certified food chemist, which have not been taught in the previous training. The content of the aptitude test is the second and third examination sections.
You must submit the application for recognition of your training informally in writing to the competent office.
- The Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs and Social Cohesion will confirm receipt of the application and documents within one month. If any documents are still missing, this will also be communicated.
- The Ministry will assess the submitted documents, decide on the recognition of your vocational training as well as the scope of the aptitude test and inform you of the decision within four months.
