Application for the issue of civil status certificates in accordance with Section 55 of the Personenstandsgesetz / PStG, civil partnership certificate

You will receive a civil partnership certificate as proof of the establishment of the civil partnership within the meaning of the Lebenspartnerschaftsgesetz (LPartG). If you require further certificates at a later date (e.g. for pension matters), the Standesamt (registry office) will issue you with additional copies at any time on request.

Notarisation of a civil partnership established abroad

Civil partnerships established abroad can be entered in a German civil partnership register. The relevant Standesamt will then issue you with civil partnership certificates on request.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

  • ID or passport (certified copy if applying in writing)
  • if collected by a representative: written authorisation from the authorised person, their ID (original or certified copy) and their own ID
  • If applicable: proof of legal interest

Voraussetzungen

The personal data in the civil status register is subject to data protection. Civil partnership certificates can therefore only be issued

  • for persons to whom the entry relates

and their

  • spouse or civil partner,
  • civil partners (within the meaning of the Personenstandsgesetz),
  • ancestors and descendants.

Other persons, including close relatives such as siblings, aunts and uncles, will only receive a civil partnership certificate if they can credibly demonstrate a legal interest (e.g. with a letter from the probate court, a court judgement or an enforceable title).

Kosten

  • Civil partnership certificate (first copy): EUR 15.00
  • if further copies are ordered at the same time: EUR 7.00 each

Verfahrensablauf

Application on site at the relevant registry office

  • Go to the relevant Standesamt:
  • Present your identity card or passport to prove your identity.
  • You usually pay the fee in advance when applying at the registry office. 

Tip: A person you trust can apply for and collect the certificate on your behalf; your representative will present their own and your identity card or passport (original or certified copy) in addition to a written power of attorney.

Applying without appearing in person at the Standesamt

  • Contact the relevant Standesamt and ask them to issue you with a civil partnership certificate. Depending on the services offered by the city or municipality, you can also find application forms on the Internet.
  • Your letter must contain the following information:
    • Surname, first name
    • Date and place of birth
    • Date of establishment of the civil partnership
    • Details of the civil partner
    • if known: Registry office and notarisation number
  • Please enclose a notarised copy of your identity card or passport with the letter.
  • If further proof is required, the Standesamt will contact you.
  • You will receive the notification of fees or a request for payment either in advance or when you receive the certificate.

Frist

The civil status registers are only kept in the Registry of Deeds for a limited period of time:

  • Birth register: 110 years
  • Marriage register: 80 years
  • Civil partnership register: 80 years
  • Death register: 30 years

After this period has expired, the civil status registers are handed over to the municipal or city archives. Requests for documents held in the archive are automatically forwarded there. There is no notification of submission.
