At the request of the parents, the Federal President takes over the honorary godparenthood for the seventh child of a family. If the request is not made for the seventh child, it can also be made for a child born later in the family.
The honorary godparenthood is only granted once in a family and is primarily symbolic in nature. The godparent gift is a one-off financial support in the amount of EUR 500,00.
In the case of multiple births, the honorary godparenthood is accepted for all children born together with the seventh child.
The godchild must be German or German within the meaning of Article 116 Paragraph 1 of the Basic Law.
At the time of application, the family must include at least seven living children, including the godchild, who are descended from the same parents, mother or father.
Note: Adopted children are treated in the same way as biological children.
You must submit the application for an honorary sponsorship to your city or municipal administration. You can obtain the application form there (see –>Forms and other offers) or online on the website of the Federal Office of Administration (Bundesverwaltungsamt):
- The city or municipal administration will check the requirements for honorary sponsorship. If you wish, information about your family's living conditions can also be included. Once the application has been checked, it is forwarded to the Federal Office of Administration in Cologne.
- Once the application has been confirmed and received by the Office of the Federal President, the latter will issue a certificate of acceptance of the honorary sponsorship.
- A representative of your community will present you with the document and the sponsorship gift.
