If you have a secondary school diploma (Realschulabschluss) or an equivalent intermediate school leaving certificate, you can acquire the entrance qualification to a University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulreife) at a two-year technical high school (Fachoberschule). You generally have to attend classes on a full-time basis.
If you have also completed a vocational training, you can acquire the entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences in a corresponding field of study at the one-year Fachoberschule (grade 12). If the professional qualification is not relevant to the field of study, a minimum of three years of work experience in an occupation relevant to the field of study is required. Instruction is also generally provided on a full-time basis.
If you are a young professional athlete and would like to acquire the entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences, you can attend the three-year extended specialized technical high school (gedehnte Fachoberschule) for talented athletes, or gFOS for short, at the Vocational School Center "Gustav Anton Zeuner" in Dresden. By extending grade 12 to two school years, you will have time to combine sports and school life.
The technical high school is offered in the following fields of study:
- agricultural economics, biotechnology and environmental technology
- design
- health and social services
- technology
- economy and administration
You may attend the specialized technical high school for talented athletes (Fachoberschule für Sporttalente gFOS) at the Vocational School Center for Technology "Gustav Anton Zeuner" in Dresden in the fields of study health and social services as well as technology.
Irrespective of the chosen field of study, the entrance qualification to universities of applied sciences, which is acquired with the successful completion of the technical high school, entitles the holder to study at universities of applied sciences or vocational academies (Berufsakademien) in any field of study throughout Germany. The high degree of practical relevance of schooling at a two-year technical high school is, in addition to the acquisition of the Fachhochschulreife, an important contribution to professional orientation in the chosen field of study. In addition, the acquisition of the Fachhochschulreife after two years of schooling enables you to shorten the duration of a dual vocational training program by twelve months.
If you would like to acquire both the Fachhochschulreife and a professional qualification, you can also choose to attend the dual-qualification educational offer technical high school plus shortened dual vocational training program (FOS+). At the FOS+, the practical part of the vocational training is continued in grade 12. This option allows students to bring forward the content of the dual vocational training program. In addition, parts of the theoretical schooling are covered by e-learning using the central Saxon online learning platform OPAL Schule.
Note: Technical high schools in the Free State of Saxony are part of the Vocational School Centers (BSZ). In addition, there are also corresponding non-governmental schools.
