Request for information from the population register in accordance with § 44 of the Bundesmeldegesetz

The registration authority will provide you with the surname, first names, doctor's degree and current addresses of the person you are looking for as part of a simple registration register enquiry. If the person is deceased, you will be informed of this.

Whether a registration authority (Meldebehörde) provides you with information about the data of the person you are looking for is at their discretion. Simple information will not be provided if an information block is entered in the register or if the registration authority has reason to believe that this could jeopardise the interests of the person concerned or another person worthy of protection.

• The person you are looking for must be clearly identifiable on the basis of the information you provide.

This means that you must already have data on the person concerned. These are usually

• the first name and surname
• the date of birth
• the gender or
• the last known address.
• If you use the data for commercial purposes, you must specify this.
• When making the enquiry, you must declare that you will not use the data for advertising or address trading purposes or that you have the data subject's consent to do so.
• If you send the enquiry to the registration authority for the purposes of advertising or address trading and the registration authority does not have your consent, you must declare to the registration authority that you have consent.
• The registration authority can demand that you present the consent of the person concerned.
• There must be no information block in the registration register.

• verbally: EUR 10.00 per data subject
• in writing and electronically on data carriers that can be processed automatically: EUR 14.00 per data subject
• in the case of greater administrative effort (e.g. when accessing data of persons who have been dead for more than ten years or who no longer live in the municipality): EUR 15.00 to EUR 50.00 per data subject

• in person: You will receive the data on site.
• in writing: You will receive the data by post.
• electronically: Depending on the service offered by the municipality, you can also apply for information from the residents' register online, provided the person you are looking for has not blocked the information. The information data will be sent to you by e-mail or, if requested, by post. 

Please note: Only information on private individuals can be obtained from the municipal register. Information on companies or commercial enterprises can only be obtained from the trade register.
