Particularly gifted children often have a harder time than "normally" gifted children. If their special talent is not recognised and supported, this can lead to a rapid decline in performance and severely limit the child's motivation to learn. Parents and teachers are therefore particularly challenged when it comes to discovering and promoting a special talent.
Since 2008, the Saxon State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs has been running the Counselling Centre for the Promotion of Gifted Children. There, parents can get expert advice on all questions concerning a special talent and information about the school and extracurricular support options for their children.

There are signs that can indicate a special talent, for example:
- The child asks a lot of questions with the aim of understanding connections in the environment.
- It has a very good memory and logical thinking ability.
- Your child shows a high capacity for abstraction.
- He has a large vocabulary and an unusually good ability to express himself.
- He shows interest in adult topics such as religion or politics.
- The child is particularly sensitive.
- The child has shown a strong urge for independence since pre-school age.
Registration
Please register with the counselling centre by telephone. Often, your questions regarding the support of your child can already be clarified in this telephone call. In other cases, an appointment will be made for a counselling session in which your child will participate.
Counselling interview
- Before the consultation, you will receive a questionnaire about your child. The information you provide on the questionnaire will serve as a basis for the discussion. If you have findings from other institutions, you can bring them with you.
- The first interview with the child should serve to assess the child's motivation and abilities. An intelligence test is not absolutely necessary, because giftedness is not solely dependent on a high intelligence quotient. Depending on the individual problem, the child may also be referred to another institution.
- The interview is conducted with two counsellors, a psychologist and an educationalist, in order to be able to determine an optimal assessment from two perspectives. Sometimes one interview is not enough.
Evaluation
- Following the interview, a concept for the optimal support of your child will be developed. The staff of the counselling centre will primarily examine the possibilities of optimal support by your child's previous school. This can also be done in consultation with the school.
- Many schools offer opportunities for individual support, for example, by having your child attend a higher class level in individual subjects. Extracurricular measures can also be suggested, such as early study alongside school. A change of school is therefore not always necessary.
In Saxony there are currently:
