Application for a grant for the first purchase of a vehicle under the Directive on the Promotion of Sales of Electrically Powered Vehicles (Environmental Bonus)

If you buy a new electric car that has been registered for the first time, you can apply for a grant from the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control. With this environmental bonus, the federal government wants to accelerate the spread of electrically powered vehicles and thus contribute to reducing air pollution. The subsidy programme runs until the end of 2025.

For which e-vehicles can you apply for a bonus?

Purchase or leasing of a new, first-time registered

• pure battery electric vehicle
• externally chargeable hybrid electric vehicle (plug-in hybrid) or fuel cell vehicle of classes M1 and N1 or N2
• Vehicle of any drive with less than 50g CO₂ emissions per kilometre

Subsidy rates for electric vehicles with a net list price of less than EUR 40,000 are as follows

• for a purely electric drive: up to EUR 9,000
• for a plug-in hybrid: up to EUR 6,750

The subsidy rates for electric vehicles with a net list price of over EUR 40,000 are as follows

• for a purely electric drive: up to EUR 7,500
• for a plug-in hybrid: up to EUR 5,625

The vehicle manufacturer must grant you a discount in the same amount.

Notes:

• There is no legal entitlement to this subsidy.
• The subsidy is limited to the budget funds available.

Innovation premium

In 2020, the subsidy was supplemented by a purchase premium for young used vehicles in the case of a second sale, provided that the second registration took place after 04.11.2019. The innovation premium doubles the federal share of the eco-bonus for young used vehicles until the end of 2022.

Further requirements

• Vehicle model from BAFA's list of eligible vehicles
• Purchase or leasing and first registration not before 18.05.2016
• First registration in Germany in the applicant's name for at least 6 months
• Discount of the car manufacturer from the net list price of the basic model (BAFA list price) in the same amount as the environmental bonus
• Net list price of the base model maximum EUR 60,000 net

Excluded from funding

• Federal and state governments and their institutions and municipalities
• Car manufacturers (including subsidiaries) who participate in the financing of the eco-bonus or have direct or indirect influence on the parent company

You can apply for the environmental bonus online at the application portal of the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA):

• Register on the BAFA application portal and follow the instructions for completing the form.
• Complete the electronic application form and upload the required supporting documents.
• BAFA will review your application and issue you with a notification of funding.
• Once you have purchased your e-mobile, you can also use the application portal to prove that the grant has been used for the intended purpose.
• After the final check, the bonus will be transferred to your account.

• Environmental bonus: Granted retroactively until 31.12.2025 for all electric and hybrid vehicles registered on or after 05.11.2019
• Innovation bonus: granted until 31.12.2021 in the case of
  • First registration after 03.06.2020
  • for second registration for vehicles registered after 04.11.2019
• Approval period: 9 months
• Proof of use: no later than 1 month after the end of the approval period
