If you realise shortly before you start your journey that your travel document has expired, in exceptional cases the border authorities can issue you with a travel document as a passport replacement directly before you cross the border.
With the travel document as a passport replacement, you can leave the country and then re-enter Germany. It is only valid for the duration of the respective journey, but for a maximum of three months. It is therefore not a full replacement for a passport. The passport authorities can also issue a temporary passport at short notice, at least on weekdays.
Please note: Other countries are not obliged to accept the travel document as a travel document. Airlines may also refuse to carry a travel document.
Tip: On the website of the Federal Police (Bundespolizei) you will find a list of countries that recognise the travel document as a passport substitute without restriction or in conjunction with an expired photo ID (e.g. passport or identity card). Please note, however, that foreign border authorities may change this practice at short notice.
There is no legal entitlement to the issue of a travel document as a passport substitute.
