Driving licences for categories C, CE, C1, C1E (HGV) and D1, D1E, D and DE (bus) are issued for a maximum of five years.
The period of validity of driving licences for categories C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE and D1E is extended by five years at the holder's request if the licence holder proves his or her suitability and that he or she meets the vision requirements. Likewise, there must be no facts that justify the assumption that one of the other requirements for the issue of a driving licence is missing. These requirements also apply if you apply for a new driving licence after your previous one has expired.

A new card driving licence is issued with the renewal.
- Identity card or passport with current registration confirmation (alternatively a current confirmation of personal data by the registration office)
- previous driving licence
- biometric photo
- certificate of a general medical examination (not older than one year at the time of application)
- certificate of a medical examination of eyesight or, if applicable, a certificate from an ophthalmologist (not older than two years at the time of application)
- occupational or occupational health certificate or certificate from an officially recognised assessment centre for fitness to drive (not older than one year at the time of application) if the driving licence for categories D1, D1E, D, DE
- extended beyond the age of 50 or after the age of 50, or
- after expiry of the period of validity for a period extending beyond the age of 50, or
- is to be reissued to an applicant who is already 50 years old after expiry of the period of validity
