If you have lost your identity card, passport or a child's passport, you are obliged to inform the Passbehörde (passport office) of your local authority or municipal administration immediately (notification of loss).
Attention! If your passport or identity card has been stolen, you must report the theft to the police as well as your local authority.
You must also inform the police immediately if you find a document that you thought was lost or stolen. This is because difficulties can arise when travelling to other countries with a document that has been reported stolen or lost: The document in question may be confiscated by the border authorities.
Note: If you do not immediately report the loss or recovery of an identity card, passport or children's passport, you are committing an administrative offence. This can be penalised with a fine of up to EUR 5,000 for identity cards and up to EUR 300,000 for passports and children's passports.
You can apply for a new lost or stolen identity document at the relevant office.
Please note that every German over the age of 16 is obliged to have a valid identity card and to be able to identify themselves. You also fulfil this obligation if you have a valid passport. However, if you only have one identity document and lose it, you must apply for a new one immediately and also have a temporary identity card or, if necessary, a new passport issued.
- As a rule: no documents to be submitted if you are merely reporting a loss.
If you wish to apply for a new identity document at the same time, you must bring the necessary documents with you.
- You must always report the loss to the responsible office in person.
- Alternatively, it is also sufficient if you send the notification to the responsible office in writing.
Note: Some municipalities provide a form for this purpose. To find out whether the office responsible for you offers such a form, enter your place of residence or postcode in the location selector. If successful, an advert with a corresponding form will then appear above the location selection. Alternatively, you can also look directly on the homepage of the responsible office.
Tip: As a new ID document usually has to be issued, it is advisable to report the loss and apply for a new one at the same time.
Attention!
- You must have the online ID function of your lost identity card blocked separately!
- You should also block the signature function if you have used it. To block the signature function, please contact the provider from whom you received the signature certificate, as this cannot be blocked by your local authority.
