In general, all children and young people living in Saxony-Anhalt are required to attend school. However, there are exceptions that put compulsory schooling on hold.

School attendance is compulsory for all children and young people living in Saxony-Anhalt. For children who reach the age of 6 by 30 June, it begins with the following school year and ends after 12 years. The statutory compulsory education of 12 years is fulfilled by attending a vocational school, unless a general education school is still attended.

Compulsory schooling may be suspended under certain conditions.

The required documents are different.

The following documents are required if required:

• Proof that you have become parents
• Medical records
• Proof of participation in a pre-vocational training measure or in an entry-level qualification
• Proof of planned participation in a voluntary service
• Proof of attendance at a vocational school for health professions
• Certificate of enrolment
• Proof of other appropriate training or supervision

Compulsory education is suspended if:

• you are a mother or father and are prevented from caring for your child adequately by attending school,
• your child is unable to attend school or attend special education for health reasons,
• you participate in pre-vocational training measures or in an introductory qualification in accordance with the Third Social Security Code,
• you participate in voluntary service under federal or state law,
• you attend a vocational school for health professions to which the Saxony-Anhalt School Act does not apply,
• you are enrolled at a university or
• In cases where other appropriate training or supervision appears to be assured.

Fees may apply. It depends on the individual case.

The procedure is different.

• As a school-age mother or father, you must submit an application. If you are still a minor, you will need the consent of your legal guardian.
• If your child is unable to attend school or attend special education for health reasons, you must submit an application as a parent or guardian.
• If you are taking part in a vocational preparation training measure or in an introductory qualification according to Book III of the Social Code, you must inform us of this.
• If you participate in volunteer service due to federal or state regulations, you must notify us.
• If you attend a vocational school for health professions that are not subject to the Saxony-Anhalt School Act, you must notify us.
• If you are enrolled at a university, you must submit an application. If you are still a minor, you will need the consent of your legal guardian.
• In cases where other training or supervision appears to be assured, this must be reported.

4 weeks before compulsory schooling is to be suspended, proof must be provided if:

• is to be taken part in a pre-vocational training measure or an entry-level qualification,
• the school-age employee wishes to participate in voluntary service,
• a vocational school for health professions is to be attended or
• other training or supervision is to take place.

Contradiction

Compulsory schooling may be suspended under certain conditions.
