If you want to practice the dental profession in Germany without restrictions, you need a state license, the Approbation.
After your studies and specialist training, you can apply for a license to practice dentistry. With the award of the license to practice dentistry, you are entitled to practice the profession of dentist in Germany independently and on your own responsibility.
The license is issued for an unlimited period and is valid for the entire Federal Republic of Germany.
- Proof of identity
- Birth certificate or a current excerpt from the family register of the parents
- if applicable, marriage certificate/registered civil partnership (proof in case of name change)
- Curriculum vitae in table form
- Official certificate of good conduct (document type O)
- The certificate of the dental examination in the original or as a certified copy.
- Declaration as to whether there are any pending criminal or public prosecution proceedings against the applicant.
- Medical certificate, not older than one month, stating that the applicant is not unfit to practice the profession from a health point of view.
The license to practice dentistry is granted upon application if you:
- have completed the prescribed training and passed the state examination.
- have not been guilty of any conduct which would render you unworthy or unreliable to practice medicine
- are not unfit for the practice of the profession from a health point of view,
- have the knowledge of the German language required for the exercise of the profession.
Is based on the respective administrative fee regulations of the state or on the fee statutes of the bodies responsible under state law.
- You submit the application for licensure including all required documents to the competent authority.
- The competent authority confirms receipt of the application and the documents and certificates within one month and informs you which documents and certificates are missing.
- The competent licensing authority will check the requirements for licensure.
- After positive completion, you will be sent an Approbation certificate against acknowledgement of receipt or with a certificate of service.
The competent authority shall decide on the application no later than three months after receipt of the required documents and certificates.

- In order to be able to work as a dentist in Germany, a separate professional license, the Approbation, is required.
