If you want to practice the profession of pharmacist in Germany without restrictions, you need a state license, the Approbation.

After successfully completing your pharmacy studies, you can apply for a license to practice as a pharmacist. With the granting of the license to practice as a pharmacist, you are entitled to practice the profession of pharmacist in Germany independently and on your own responsibility.

The license is granted for an unlimited period and is valid for the entire Federal Republic of Germany.

• Birth certificate or a current extract from the parents' family register
• If applicable, marriage certificate/registered civil partnership (proof in case of name change)
• Curriculum vitae in table form
• An official certificate of good conduct (document type O), which must have been issued no earlier than one month prior to submission.
• The certificate of passing the pharmaceutical examination
• A statement as to whether there are any criminal proceedings pending against the applicant or any preliminary proceedings by the public prosecutor's office
• Medical certificate, not older than one month, stating that the applicant is not unfit to practice the profession from a health point of view.

The license to practice as a pharmacist is granted upon application if you:

• have completed the prescribed training and passed the state examination.
• have not been guilty of any conduct which would render you unworthy or unreliable to practice as a pharmacist
• are not unfit for the practice of the profession from a health point of view,
• have the knowledge of the German language required for the practice of the profession.

• You submit the application for licensure, including all required documents, to the responsible office.
• The responsible licensing authority checks the completeness of the submitted documents and whether the legal requirements can be sufficiently proven.
• Missing or insufficiently submitted documents will be requested by the responsible licensing authority, if necessary.
• The responsible licensing authority checks the licensing requirements.
• After positive completion, an Approbation certificate will be issued or delivered to you against acknowledgement of receipt.

The processing time varies between the competent licensing authorities of the federal states.
