If you intend to operate or significantly modify a technical X-ray device and this is not subject to approval, you are obliged to notify the competent authority.

By notifying the competent authority in writing of a technical X-ray device, you are stating that you intend to operate or significantly modify such a device. This may include X-ray equipment that is to be used as a basic, high or full protection device.

• Proof of expertise in radiation protection in accordance with the Radiation Protection Ordinance with proof of updating
• Certificate and test report from the expert(s) on the radiation protection test
• Type approval certificate with confirmation of routine testing (if applicable) (type approval = for device in general; confirmation of routine testing = for the specific device)
• CE certificate of conformity (if applicable)
• Personnel deployment, i.e. proof of knowledge of radiation protection and updates of this knowledge for personnel working on the X-ray equipment

A technical X-ray device may be operated if it is notified to the competent authority at least four weeks before commissioning and the inspection by the authority reveals no grounds for refusal. The same applies to a significant change in the operation of a technical X-ray device.

You submit the notification form with the required evidence to the competent authority at least four weeks before the planned commissioning or significant change to the operation.

Upon receipt of the complete notification and the required evidence, the competent authority must review it within four weeks.

After this four-week period has expired, you may operate the X-ray equipment or make significant changes to the operation unless the authority refuses operation and/or suspends the notification procedure because the examination shows that further testing procedures are required.

If this does not take place, you can also start operating the X-ray equipment or making significant changes to the operation if the authority informs you in writing before the deadline that all the necessary evidence has been provided. You will receive the notification of fees with the notification confirmation.

If the authorities refuse to allow you to operate the X-ray equipment or to make significant changes to it, you can take legal action against this.
