If you wish to marry abroad, there may be a legal standard in the country where you intend to marry that requires you to present such a certificate.

An application for a certificate of no impediment to marriage is submitted to the competent registry office 1 in Berlin. If the examination shows that there is no impediment to the intended marriage under German law and the necessary personal details of both parties to the marriage have been provided, the registry office will issue the requested certificate of no impediment.
