Intermediate examinations consist of a written part of the examination and, if necessary, another practical part of the examination. Both parts of the exam usually take place on different days. The written part of the examination usually takes place nationwide on a fixed day at the same time.

An intermediate examination is carried out regionally by the responsible authorities (e.B. Chamber of Industry and Commerce) for all trainees about half of the training period. The date is laid down in the training regulations.

If you have concluded a training contract with a company, this training relationship has been notified by your training company to the regionally responsible body (e.B. Chamber of Industry and Commerce). The competent authority therefore knows in which period you have to take your intermediate examination. They will therefore be notified of the examination by the competent authority in a letter or electronically.

The implementation of the interim examination is organised by the regionally responsible body in consultation with the voluntary examination committee. The examination board, consisting of employer representatives, employee representatives and teachers' representatives, takes your examination performance and evaluates it.
 
The examination result determined by the Audit Committee is transmitted to the competent authority. You will receive the results in the form of a certificate of participation.

Intermediate examinations only take place in occupations in which the training regulations do not provide for a final examination in two parts.

Participation in intermediate examinations is mandatory for all trainees.

However, an intermediate examination may be omitted for you if another training that has already been completed has been credited with at least two years in your training relationship.

Upon request, you can also take part in an intermediate examination as a retraining participant, but then you or the person responsible for the measure must bear the costs of the examination.

The examination fee is based on the respective fee schedules of the regionally responsible body. The costs must be borne by the training company.

Retrainees bear the fees themselves and must clarify with the Employment Agency or the educational institution whether funding may be considered.

As a rule, the authority responsible for you will notify you of the upcoming intermediate examination.

Your intermediate examination result will be sent to you in the form of a certificate of participation.

The entire procedure of the intermediate examination including registration, invitation, execution of all parts of the examination, determination of results and dispatch of the certificate of participation takes about 5 months.

The registration deadline for the intermediate examination is approximately 3 months before the written examination date. You can find out the exact registration deadline from the regionally responsible office.

Due to the regular modernisation of training occupations, more and more occupations are no longer taking intermediate examinations, but are being replaced by Part 1 of the final examination.
