Secondary school is a type of secondary school that follows on from elementary school. It comprises grades 5 to 10 and leads to the Hauptschulabschluss or Realschulabschluss. It is also possible to obtain the qualified Hauptschulabschluss and the extended Realschulabschluss. In addition to the general curriculum, the secondary school focuses on preparing your child for a career. The aim is to prepare pupils in detail for the world of work later on.

Your child will receive the Hauptschulabschluss if they have successfully completed year 9.

Your child will receive the Realschulabschluss if he or she has attended the 10th grade and passed the final examination. With certain performance requirements, your child can obtain the extended Realschulabschluss. With the extended Realschulabschluss, your child can transfer to the gymnasiale Oberstufe and achieve the Abitur.

The Gemeinschaftsschule is a type of secondary school that follows on from elementary school. Your child can obtain the following qualifications at the Gemeinschaftsschule:

• Hauptschulabschluss
• Realschule certificate
• Abitur
• All children learn together up to year 8 and are supported according to their abilities.

The community schools work cooperatively with the grammar schools.

If you want to register your child at a secondary school or community school, you must apply for this.

• If your child is to attend a secondary school or community school, your child is also entitled to this if the type of school is offered. However, your child is not entitled to attend a particular school.
• To register, fill out the "school career declaration".
• If there are not enough places for a school, the school places are allocated through a selection process.

You must submit the school career declaration to the elementary school you are currently attending by the deadline. The school will inform you of the deadline when it issues the half-year report or the school career declaration.

For children who have previously attended a school in another federal state or abroad, the school authority decides which type of school is suitable based on previous performance and the content taught.
