Religious education and and ethics lessons are regular subjects at public schools. Pupils take part in these lessons - regardless of their affiliation to a religious community - either religious education or ethics lessons. Ethics lessons are a compulsory subject if the pupils do not take part in religious education. At the beginning of the first and fifth school year, parents decide for their children whether they wish to take part in ethics lessons, Protestant religious education or Catholic religious education. Pupils can decide for themselves about their participation in religious education from the time they reach the age of religious maturity at the age of 14. From the age of 12, however, you may not be educated in another denomination against your will. Your parents /legal guardians can no longer no longer withdraw you against your will .

You must deregister your child from religious education in writing to the school management.

Depending on age, the following applies to you:

• before the 12th birthday:
  Both parents /the legal guardians must sign the declaration.
• after the 12th and before the 14th birthday:
  Both parents /the legal guardians must sign the declaration. Pupils must also give their express consent to the school management.
• after the 14th and before the 18th birthday:
  Pupil or pupil must sign the declaration. At the handover date at the school management, the parents //the legal guardians must be invited.
• In addition to the signatures of the parents /legal guardians or the signature of the child, the declaration must contain the following information:
  • Name
  • Class
  • Date
  • School/location

A change between the three subjects is possible on application and generally takes place at the beginning of the next school semester.

The corresponding religious education lessons are only offered if the prescribed minimum number of pupils is reached and the lessons can be professionally secured.

The pupils regardless of their affiliation to a religious community - take part in either religious education or in the compulsory ethics lessons participate.
