There are many reasons why studies are interrupted. In most cases, a semester off is requested for this. If you also want to apply for a leave of absence, there must be an important reason for doing so.

Important reasons for a leave of absence include:

• pregnancy
• a semester abroad
• a temporary job offer

Each university decides for itself whether a leave of absence is granted in your case.

The advantage of a leave of absence is that you remain enrolled. This means that you keep your place at university. The leave of absence will not be counted towards your standard period of study. However, you are not entitled to benefits under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) during your leave of absence.

You can usually only apply for leave of absence 2 times for a maximum of 2 semesters.

You must submit the application in good time before each semester within the re-registration period.

If you interrupt your studies but do not apply for a leave of absence or if it is rejected, this can lead to financial disadvantages. Your entitlement to BAföG expires during the interruption. In addition, this interruption will be credited to your standard period of study. If you exceed the standard period of study, you will have to pay tuition fees.
