The second-chance schools are divided into

• the evening secondary school (Abendsekundarschule),
• the evening grammar school and
• the Kolleg.

The evening secondary school is run in the form of evening classes at secondary schools and community schools. There you can acquire the Hauptschulabschluss, the Realschulabschluss and the extended Realschulabschluss.

The course usually lasts two and a half years (preliminary course, 1st and 2nd school year).

• an informal application form
• a certified copy of the most recent general school certificate

The original birth certificate must be submitted with the application documents.

You can be admitted to the evening secondary school if you have reached the age of 18 when you join the evening class. The state education authority decides on exceptions.

• You can be admitted to the preliminary course if you have a leaving certificate from year 8 of secondary school or an equivalent certificate. If you do not have the required leaving certificate, you can be accepted after an aptitude interview.
• You can be accepted into the 1st school year if you have a 9th grade leaving certificate or a secondary school leaving certificate or an equivalent qualification.
• You can be admitted to the 2nd school year if you have a qualified Hauptschulabschluss or Realschulabschluss or a qualification equivalent to the Realschulabschluss.
• You can also be admitted to the 2nd school year if you have already been admitted to the 2nd school year and have dropped out of evening secondary school without passing the final examination. You must then give reasons for this.

• You apply with the complete documents to the state education authority.
• If your application is successful, you will receive notification of the school at which the evening class has been set up and at which school you can register.
• You present this notification at this school.
• Your education will then begin at the secondary school.

Registration for the preliminary course: by December 01

Registration for the 1st or 2nd school year: by April 01
