If you want to drive into an environmental zone, you need a fine dust sticker/ environmental badge. Here you will find information.

For areas with poor air quality, there are air pollution control plans. Air pollution control plans contain measures to improve air quality. Environmental zones are a possible measure of such air pollution control plans. Environmental zones reduce particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide pollution. Vehicles with high pollutant emissions are not allowed to drive in environmental zones.

If you want to drive your vehicle in such an environmental zone, you must purchase a fine dust sticker/ environmental badge. The badge is available in three different colours, each of which is assigned to a pollutant group. The classification of your vehicle in one of the pollutant groups depends on the emission key numbers. These can be found in the vehicle documents.

Note: A separate traffic sign indicates the environmental zones. The additional sign indicates the colours of the badges with which vehicles can travel freely in the specific environmental zone.

In order to receive an environmental badge, your vehicle must meet the criteria of pollutant groups 2, 3 or 4.

You cannot obtain a sticker for vehicles in pollutant group 1. These are

• Petrol engine without regulated catalytic converter and
• older diesel vehicles with Euro 1 emission standard or worse.

Depending on the city or district, AU workshop or testing organization: usually EUR 5.00 - 8.00

Tip: Some urban and county counties provide online services. You can use this to order an environmental badge. You pay by direct debit, bank transfer or credit card. The badge will be sent to you by post. The exact regulations can be found on the internet offers.

If you are planning to drive into an environmental zone, make an effort to buy a fine dust sticker / environmental badge at an early stage if possible. If there are delays and you do not have a fine dust sticker / environmental badge, you are not allowed to drive into the environmental zone.

The badges are issued by the registration office of your district or your district-free city (main residence) as well as by all bodies that are authorized to carry out the exhaust gas test. In addition to the testing centres of the monitoring organisations (e.g. TÜV, Dekra), these are also many automotive workshops.
