If you wish to work as an expert for damage to buildings, you must be publicly appointed and sworn in by the competent authority. The following information relates only to the two building chambers in NRW.
To be publicly appointed and sworn in as an expert for building damage, applicants must prove their special expertise and ability to prepare expert reports as well as their personal integrity, trustworthiness and neutrality. Only after completing the examination procedure do they receive an appointment certificate, expert certificate and round stamp. In the course of the public appointment, the experts take an oath that they will carry out their tasks independently, impartially, without instructions and conscientiously.

- Curriculum vitae in tabular form with description of professional career and photograph
- Originals or officially certified copies of examination certificates
- Proof of previous professional activity, stating the special expertise: Proof of qualified employment of at least five years which was suitable to provide the necessary practical knowledge for the work of an expert.
- Proof of personal reliability: Information from the Federal Central Criminal Register
- Proof of liability insurance
If an employment or service relationship exists, additionally:
- Declaration that the employment contract does not conflict with the requirements and that they can carry out their expert activities personally; b) they are not subject to any professional instructions in their expert activities in individual cases and can identify their services as having been prepared by themselves; c) their employer releases them to the necessary extent for the expert activities (declaration of release)
- You can be publicly appointed as an expert upon application if the following requirements are met:
- There must be a need for expert services in the subject area applied for.
- You have your main place of business as an expert in Germany.
- You have sufficient life and professional experience
- There are no concerns about your personal suitability
- You can demonstrate significantly above-average specialist knowledge, practical experience and the ability to provide both expert opinions and the services specified in the expert regulations of the competent chamber,
- You have the facilities required to work as a publicly appointed expert
- You live in orderly financial circumstances
- You offer a guarantee of impartiality and independence as well as compliance with the duties of publicly appointed experts
- You demonstrate that you have knowledge of the relevant law and the ability to explain technical findings and assessments in a comprehensible manner
- You have the necessary mental and physical capacity to meet the requirements of the subject area applied for

- Only those persons can be publicly appointed and sworn in who have proven special professional qualifications in the respective subject area and who can prepare their expert opinions in an economically independent manner.
- Responsible: Depends on the respective state law. In NRW, this includes IK Bau NRW and the NRW Chamber of Architects (the chambers of industry and commerce also appoint these experts)
